Born and brought up in Port Blair, singer-songwriter Zayed Khan feels that hailing from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands has worked in his favour. After recording the title track of Ahilyabai Holkar and Khan’s biopic, now focusing on indie songs and live performances.
The singer says, “I was very apprehensive before shifting my base to Mumbai but everyone has been very welcoming here. They were more than happy to help and support me. I think my native place helped me create a special connection with him. He took me and my work very seriously and that helped me to establish myself in this wonderful city.
Describing his journey, Khan said, “I come from a family of freedom fighters. My father used to do live shows but unfortunately he passed away when I was just four years old. So, at the age of nine I started doing live shows, writing and making music. I got an offer from Punjabi musician OA Kunal where I wrote the lyrics and sang a song what you don’t get Which was shot in my hometown. I have also shown in the video. I had come to Mumbai in January last year and was doing a film project.
About his first song, he says, “Lyricist Manoj Muntashir has penned the lyrics for the film. I have come to know that they are planning to cast Priyanka Chopra Jonas and the shooting is going to start soon.
Another indie song from Khan has come Didar Featuring Khushbu Khan and has been viewed millions of times. “I have recorded two indie songs and both are interlinked. The second song will be released soon. Besides this, he is in talks with filmmaker Wasim Amrohi to write and sing for the biopic of freedom fighter Udham Singh.
He is planning to sing live again after the month of Ramzan. “I have a set-up in my hometown which helps me survive in Mumbai. Now I want to return to singing soon. I have named my rented house Andaman House, where I have two acquaintances from Andaman – a budding singer and actor. I want to help the talented youth of the islands find work in the industry.”
