A day after turning gangster, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Sunday said strictest punishment should be given to criminals, but it should be according to the law of the land and playing with the rule of law for any political purpose is against democracy. Not right for Politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were shot dead in Uttar Pradesh.
Ahmed (60) and his brother Ashraf were shot at by three men while interacting with the media on Saturday night when policemen were taking them to a medical college in Prayagraj for examination.
Priyanka Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi without naming anyone that the law of the country is written in the Constitution and this law is paramount.
“Strictest punishment should be given to the culprits, but it should be as per the law of the land. The Congress General Secretary said that playing with or violating the rule of law and judicial process for any political purpose is not right for our democracy.
Priyanka Gandhi said, “Whoever does this, or gives protection to those who indulge in such acts, should also be held responsible and the law should be strictly enforced on that person.”
He said that it should be the endeavor of all of us that the judicial system and rule of law should be supreme in the country.
Ahmed and Ashraf, both jailed in Prayagraj, were handcuffed when they were murdered around 10 pm in front of the camera crew.
The horrifying visuals were widely circulated on social media platforms and television channels. Ahmed’s son Asad, who was killed in a police encounter in Jhansi on April 13, was cremated in Prayagraj a few hours before he was shot.
Briefing reporters about the incident, Prayagraj Police Commissioner Ramit Sharma said that the three assailants arrested soon after the incident had joined a group of media persons who were trying to get sound bites from Ahmed and Ashraf .
“As per the mandatory legal requirement, Ateeq Ahmed and Ashraf were brought to the hospital for medical examination. According to the initial information, three people who came posing as journalists came near him and opened fire. Ahmed and Ashraf were killed in the attack. The attackers have been nabbed and are being interrogated,” Sharma said.
Video footage showed a man pointing a gun at Ahmed’s head as he spoke to reporters and the former Samajwadi Party (SP) MP collapsed. The footage showed the three assailants firing at the brothers even as they fell.
The bullet-riddled bodies of Ahmed and Ashraf were removed from the spot due to tension in the area following the sensational killings.
