Hera Phera 3, Tiger 3, Drishyam 3: Bollywood’s tryst with popular franchises

Some films leave such a lasting impression that the audience is often left asking for more. Here is a list of such Hindi film franchises from various genres whose third installment is the most talked about movie buffs.

Fukrey 3: The Fukrey franchise starring Pulkit Samrat, Varun Sharma, Manjot Singh and Ali Fazal revolves around four friends who look for easy ways to make money. It also stars Richa Chadha in the role of Bholi Punjaban. When director Mrigdeep Singh Lamba announced the end of the third film franchise in June, the first two parts were a super hit and fans couldn’t keep calm. Talking about the film, Richa had earlier said, ‘The film is going to get bigger and better. I’m really excited.” He added that the film’s “premise was ridiculous”, which would be made believable by the cast.

Tiger 3: Directed by Maneesh Sharma, the third part of the Salman Khan starrer will also see actors like Katrina Kaif reprising her role and Emraan Hashmi, Riddhi Dogra as new additions. The first two installments featured Khan and Kaif as undercover agents from India and Pakistan, respectively, who fall in love and get married. No news has come out about the plot yet, but the film is expected to release in Diwali 2023. Announcing the release date, Salman also shared the first poster of the film, which shows an intense glimpse of himself. In the closeup photo, only one eye and his wrist of the actor were visible while the rest of his face was buried behind a dupatta.

Aashiqui 3: The films of the Aashiqui franchise have been one of the most awaited projects, and this time heartthrob Kartik Aaryan is coming as the lead actor. Aryan made the announcement by sharing the motion poster of the romantic drama on his Instagram account. In his recent Variety interview about Aashiqui 3, Kartik had said, “The timeless classic Aashiqui is something I grew up watching and working on Aashiqui 3 is a dream come true.” As far as the female lead is concerned, speculations are rife that Jennifer Winget will be cast opposite Aryan, but nothing is finalized as of now.

Heriya Pheri 3 Been in the news for one reason or the other. There were earlier speculations about who would be involved in the film, including that Kartik Aaryan had been roped in for a pivotal role. Putting an end to all speculations, Suniel Shetty has finally revealed that in the film, he will be seen alongside Akshay Kumar, and Paresh Rawal reprising his popular characters, Shyam, Raju and Baburao respectively. The film soon landed in another controversy when fans showed their dismay and disapproval over the decision to sign Farhad Samji as the director of the film, as they trended the hashtag ‘Remove Farhad Samji from Hera Pheri’ on Twitter. The director later reacted to this in an interview and said “Everybody tries their best and if anybody has a problem, they try to fix it by making better movies and writing better punches.”

Welcome 3: After the success of Welcome and Welcome Back, Firoz Nadiadwala is busy planning the third installment of the series and as revealed by the producer, will be called Welcome to the Jungle. It will retain the humour, wit and entertainment associated with this franchise and apart from this, it will be based on the backdrop of a military action. The action in this film will be tremendous. It will be made on a scale that has never been seen before in Indian cinema in terms of production values, grandeur etc,” Nadiadwala had earlier said in an interview. The star cast is not finalized yet, but all the big names are expected to be included in it. As per the latest reports, the film is set to go on floors in 2023.

KGF 3: The second installment of the film franchise KGF: Chapter 2 saw Rocky Bhai drowning in the sea after facing off against the Indian Navy. Right when the audience assumed him dead, director Prashant Neel teased the character’s return in the third part of the film series. While there is no update on when the film will go on floors, but during a media interaction, Yash said that he is not planning to join the project anytime soon as he wants to play different characters.

Force 3: John Abraham won hearts as ACP Yashvardhan Singh, a no-nonsense cop. After the success of the first part, the team came out with Force 2 almost five years later, which was equally successful. And now, as per the latest reports, Force 3 is also in the making. Reports close to the film say, “John Abraham has acquired all the rights of the Force franchise from Vipul Shah and is all set to take things to the next level on the action front. that does justice to the kind of action spectacle he wants to create in the Force universe. Once the script is finalized, his team will move on to another aspect of pre-production .

Scene 3: Drishyam 1 and 2, starring Mohanlal in the original version and Ajay Devgn in its Hindi adaptation, were widely accepted by the audience as well as critics. Riding high on the success of the two films, South Indian producer Antony Perumbavoor recently officially confirmed actor Mohanlal’s ‘Drishyam 3’ at an award function. As per reports, the third part is in the works and the scripting for the film is already underway. Moreover, the Bhola star clearly feels that with the remakes of Drishyam 1 and 2 proving to be big hits, it is better that the third installment is made in Malayalam as well. Hence, the movies – Hindi as well as Malayalam – may release at the same time.

Brahmastra 3: After the successful release of Brahmastra in theatres, director Ayan Mukerji has announced not just one but two more films in the franchise. ‘Brahmastra Part 2: Dev’ and ‘Brahmastra Part 3’ are slated to release in 2026 and 2027 respectively, as shared by the filmmaker on his Instagram handle. He also revealed that the second and third installments would be made simultaneously, allowing them to release Closer simultaneously. However, latest reports suggest that the new films will be produced under a different production house, as Karan Johar and Ayan Mukerji reportedly had a fight over the upcoming films.

Maze 3: Kartik Aaryan will be reprising his role of Rooh Baba in the third installment of Bhool Bhulaiyaa. Taking to his social media handle, the actor dropped an announcement post and also shared a short video featuring his popular dialogue from Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2. The film will be released on the occasion of Diwali 2024. The first film of the franchise starred Akshay Kumar and Vidya. Balan in the lead role, while Kiara Advani along with Aryan replaced the two veterans in the second part, which initially didn’t go down well with the audience. But the film turned out to be a blockbuster, finally getting people out of their homes after Covid.
