Big blow for KKR, Shreyas Iyer likely to be ruled out of IPL 2023, Indian batsman out of WTC final count: Report

Two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have reportedly suffered an early setback ahead of the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. The flagship batsman of the KKR franchise recently made a comeback into the Indian Test squad after missing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series opener against Australia.

However, Iyer was dealt a fresh blow as the star batsman did not come out to bat in the fourth Test due to lower back pain. Later, Iyer was ruled out of the three-match One Day International (ODI) series between Rohit Sharma’s team India and Australia due to a back injury. As per multiple reports, star batsman Iyer will not lead KKR in IPL 2023 as the Kolkata skipper is expected to be out of action for the next 4-5 months.

According to a report filed by times of India, Iyer is likely to go under the knife. If Iyer undergoes back surgery, the star batsman will be ruled out for 4-5 months. In this way Iyer will miss the entire season of IPL. This middle-order batsman will not be able to play even in the final of the Test Championship. India will take on Australia in the final of the ICC World Test Championship at The Oval in June. Reports suggested that Iyer has been advised to undergo back surgery.

Iyer can get the operation done by a specialist in London, although his surgery can also be done in India. Iyer reportedly consulted Dr Abhay Nene in Mumbai. The Mumbaikar was not named in India’s Test squad for the first match of the series against Australia after failing to recover in time from his back injury. Earlier, Iyer had missed the ODI series between India and New Zealand due to a back injury. Iyer suffered a lower back injury after India’s Test series win over Bangladesh in 2022.

One of the finest batsmen in world cricket, Iyer was bought by KKR in the mega auction for IPL 2022. The former Delhi Capitals (DC) captain joined KKR for a staggering amount of Rs 12.25 crore. The 28-year-old has played 101 matches in the IPL. The KKR skipper made his IPL debut in 2015 against MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Iyer also guided DC to their maiden IPL final in 2020. The KKR skipper scored 2776 runs in the richest T20 league in the world.
