At least three people were killed in a blast at an illegal firecracker manufacturing unit in a residential area of West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district late on Monday evening.
“We have recovered three bodies. They were burnt beyond recognition. The fire broke out at a unit operating at a house in Maheshtala,” said a police officer, who did not wish to be named.
Residents told reporters that the three were the landlord’s wife, son and a neighbor. He said the blaze occurred around 6 pm and three fire engines were rushed to the spot, but the fire continued till late night.
A fire department official said the unit did not have any fire extinguishing system, though a team of forensic officers was expected to visit the site to collect samples and ascertain the cause of the fire.
Minister Sujit Bose promised to investigate how the unit is running in the residential area.
